Meatbodies
Alice
In The Red Records [2017]
Who: Meatbodies are a California-based trio with connections to Fuzz and Mikal Cronin .
Sound: Alice is a heavy psychedelic stoner rock epic. Fans of Ty Segall, Wand, Fuzz and Mikal Cronin will eat this up.
TFN Final Take: Alice is fantastic. Chad Ubovich (Fuzz, Mikal Cronin) Kevin Boog and Patrick Nolan have created a thoroughly entertaining fuzzed out album that blends bits of 70’s era Pink Floyd with heavy garage rock that Ty Segall and Wand do so well.
Meatbodies are not afraid to add something more to the mix. At times Alice features 80’s thrash rock riffs, other times they employ Black Sabbath-esque monolithic sludge riffs and then on tracks “Scavenger” and “Gyre” I can hear galloping metal rhythms and riffs akin to early Iron Maiden (l swear I hear Wrathchild at the 3 minute mark of Scavenger) Cool stuff to me. The kitchen sink approach helps keep things fresh and makes for some great head-banging moments.
There are so many cool moments on this record. There really is not a bad track on Alice so it makes for an easy listen from beginning to end. It is heavy and a little weird, but mostly it is just cool. Really cool.
