Album Review
Karate Boogaloo • Access All Areas • Instrumental Soul Funk

“Access All Areas proves that Karate Boogaloo know exactly when to let an instrument speak and when to let the entire band take over.”

Karate Boogaloo have spent nearly two decades perfecting their instrumental funk and soul sound, and Access All Areas shows just how much they have matured and can accomplish by trusting the process. Following 2024’s Hold Your Horses, the Australian quartet settles into tight rhythms, warm organ tones, and guitar lines that know exactly when to step forward and when to pull back. What I really like about this record is how the band uses space to make every instrument count. The isolated drumbeat that opens “Butterfly” immediately establishes the pocket, while “Booger’s Bounce of Joy” pulls almost everything away in its final third, letting the organ create its own percussive groove. That patience pays off, making even the smallest instrumental shifts feel important. Even on the more upbeat “Ballroom Blitz,” the band passes the spotlight between instruments, shifting tones without ever losing the groove. Recorded with a four-track tape setup, the music has a lived-in character, as if the band is playing right there in your living room. There is something incredibly satisfying about hearing a simple foot-tapping rhythm gradually turn into a full-band sway. Nothing feels forced, and that is exactly why it works as one of the band’s best releases.

Pivotal Tracks

“Down Home”
A wonderfully nostalgic funk workout built around a loose, gritty drum sound and a melody that feels like an old favorite the first time you hear it.
“Wet Day Timetable”
A great example of the band’s knack for creating an inviting instrumental groove without overcrowding the arrangement.
“Booger’s Bounce of Joy”
The organ steals the spotlight when the arrangement drops away in the final third, proving that sometimes the best rhythm section is the one you least expect.

Artists with Similar Fire

Surprise Chef
Fellow Australian instrumental soul specialists who share Karate Boogaloo’s love of vintage tones, patient arrangements, and grooves that never need to shout.
Magic In Threes
Their dusty, cinematic funk blends laid-back rhythms and warm instrumentation with the same appreciation for keeping things simple.
The Rugged Nuggets
A perfect match for listeners who enjoy stripped-down instrumental soul, punchy rhythms, and melodies that sound like they were pulled from a forgotten 1970s soundtrack.

Review History: Hold Your Horses (2024)

A lifelong fan of new music—spent the '90s working in a record store and producing alternative video shows. In the 2000s, that passion shifted online with blogging, diving headfirst into the indie scene and always on the lookout for the next great release. Still here, still listening, and still sharing the best of what’s new.
