The Drin’s “Prophets of Doom” Is a Lumbering Drone Rock Blast From a Band That Just Won’t Behave
The Drin has been quietly building a reputation in the DIY punk underworld for years: chaotic live shows, records that blend dub, post-punk, krautrock, punk, hardcore, and avant-garde without breaking a sweat, and an overall aesthetic that suggests a band operating entirely on its own terms. I Lost My Way for Centuries, out September 18 on Feel It Records, is their boldest move yet: a 23-track double LP that sounds like a collapsing house, all dirt and deterioration and ghosts rattling around in the rubble. It’s a bruising record, and it is very much worth your time.
Second single “Prophets of Doom” is a lumbering drone rock tune that calls to mind a more accessible Parson Sound — the late-60s Swedish psych outfit — run through the Velvet Underground and cranked until the walls shake. It sits comfortably alongside the first single “Haven’t Lived It Yet,” which leaned darker and catchier, and together they sketch out a record that covers serious ground. Fans of Pere Ubu, Amon Düül II, Jesus and Mary Chain, and Current 93 should already be paying attention.
