Spencer Peppet Returns With Nine Years of Quiet Behind Her on “Power”

The Ophelias frontwoman shares her first solo music since 2017, and it opens with a wall of noise and lands somewhere wry, heavy, and entirely her own.

Spencer Peppet has been the lyrical engine of The Ophelias for years, consistently earning praise for her ability to make the precise feel elusive and the elusive feel precise. “Power” is her first solo release in nine years, and it arrives fully formed: a surge of noise, a moment of quiet strumming, and then a wall of heavy, driving guitar that makes room for Peppet to be funny and beguiling and genuinely unnerving all at once. Produced by Calvin Lauber (Julien Baker) with sampling by Jevin Almazan, it sounds like nothing The Ophelias have released, which is exactly the point of a solo record.

The video was made by Peppet and photographer Jo Shaffer (Hell Is Empty), shot across various cities in the US. It matches the song’s combination of beauty and mild menace. The Ophelias are on the road this weekend supporting Julien Baker in Athens, GA for three nights — Baker’s first solo performances since 2024, and tickets are nearly sold out.

“Why are all drinks $18 now? What is that? A drink should be $10. This song is about watching beautiful people at a fancy event and feeling like I don’t belong, and then getting mad about something else entirely.”
