GIFT Find Clarity in the Frenzy on “Every Step”
TJ Freda’s Brooklyn band share the second single from Frenzy For The Thrill, out January 15 via Captured Tracks, and it offers a moment of hard-won perspective amid the album’s controlled chaos.
GIFT have been building toward Frenzy For The Thrill across two albums and a lot of road time, and “Every Step” suggests the January release is going to pay that off. Where lead single “Hand to the Flame” announced the album’s dance-punk voltage, this one settles into something more measured: a frazzled mind clearing from the haze, Freda’s lyric reaching for perspective without pretending to find easy answers. The song is the emotional counterweight the album apparently needs, and it works.
Frenzy For The Thrill marks a deliberate departure from the transcendence-seeking of GIFT’s earlier records. Having found that particular coping mechanism no longer working, Freda pulled toward grittier reference points — 90s alt-rock, grunge, brasher electronic music — and brought in electronic producer Teddy Mars (Samples From Mars) to co-produce alongside the full band. The result is their most visceral and collaborative album yet, dance music’s structure welded to their heaviest performances. The band is currently on the road supporting Post Animal, with a full month of Temples dates lined up through December.
“Perspective follows every step, whether you lean toward hope or toward heaviness. Beauty lives in the broken places, and something broken lives in every beautiful thing.”
