The Same Place
The Olivia Tremor Control — 2026

“The Same Place is the perfect final chapter in the tragic, triumphant story of The Olivia Tremor Control.”
Throughout the second half of the ’90s, The Olivia Tremor Control released some of the best psychedelic music of that decade or any other. Part of the Elephant 6 collective that included acts like Neutral Milk Hotel and The Apples In Stereo, the band released a smattering of EPs and singles alongside two monumental albums (Dusk At Cubist Castle in 1996, Black Foliage in 1999) before going on hiatus for several years. They reemerged in the late 2000s, and anticipation was high for a new album when tragedy struck with the sudden passing of co-founder Bill Doss in 2012. Grieving, the band went inactive again for the following decade, but two new Olivia Tremor Control songs appeared on the soundtrack for The Elephant 6 Recording Co., a 2022 documentary about the collective. On the same day those songs were released, the band was dealt another devastating blow with the passing of their other co-founder, Will Cullen Hart. Considering all of that upheaval, it’s a miracle that The Same Place, the band’s third and final album, exists at all. What’s even more incredible is how it stands shoulder to shoulder with the band’s best work.
Assembled by OTC member Derek Almstead along with producers Jason NeSmith and Ron Kwasman, The Same Place is a towering 27-track double album (exactly like its two predecessors) that offers a perfect encapsulation of the band’s surreal brand of psychedelic pop. To be clear, this is not some cobbled-together posthumous release: most of the songs were either finished or only needed minimal overdubs, and both Doss’s and Hart’s vocals are all over the album (along with contributions from other band members, including a touching lead vocal from keyboardist Peter Erchick on “Now Begin”). Most of the recent work went into mixing and sequencing the album, pulling together tracks culled from numerous recording sessions going as far back as the early 2000s.
Unsurprisingly, The Same Place is cut from the same cloth as Dusk At Cubist Castle and Black Foliage, weaving together psychedelic pop hooks, dream-like sound collages, soaring harmonies, and fuzzed-out guitar riffs. It even has a big multi-song suite on side three just like Dusk’s “Green Typewriters” sequence. But while “Path of the Parallels I-VII” gets a bit more abstract than some of the album’s catchier moments, that abstraction is tied together by repeating lyrical motifs and creatively juxtaposed melodies that keep it from floating too far afield. In many ways the album is even more diverse than the first two records, with touches of late-night jazz (“Impressions Through The Ring”), raga-krautrock experimentation (“The Spinning Continuous”), and even cosmic country (“California Demise 4”) shifting into focus against the album’s kaleidoscopic backdrop. At the same time, it might be the band’s most accessible work. All of the band’s signature elements were present from the beginning on Dusk At Cubist Castle, but those elements were more discrete, and Black Foliage started the process of integrating their pop instincts with their penchant for the avant-garde. The Same Place feels like the natural completion of that process, synthesizing every facet of the Olivia Tremor Control’s musical world.
After 27 years of anticipation, The Same Place is finally here. It was worth the wait.
