Nick Kizirnis – “Slipping Away” [Video]

Nick Kizirnis has been a staple on the Dayton, Ohio music scene dating back to the late 80’s. From indie rock to surf to rockabilly and beyond, Nick has covered a multitude of genres and been included in a multitude of projects. That musical road has now arrived at his new solo album The Distance which is out February 1 via Atom Records. “Slipping Away” is the first video from the record which was directed by Sam Manavis.

The Distance features Kate Wakefield (Lung) and Mark Patterson (Son Volt) as well as Tod Weidner (Shrug, Motel Beds), Crazy Joe and Patrick Himes (Bribing Senators). The best description of the album comes straight from Nick in his own words:

“The Distance is a collection of songs about heartbreak and heartache from different points of view. The album began as a personal songwriting challenge, and when I found that I had a large set of songs but was having trouble finishing them, I tried to imagine what they would sound like if I DIDN’T sing them, or even play them. How would they change? It was something I had never done before and it opened up all sorts of possibilities, especially the chance to work with It was a completely new experience and the most rewarding one I’ve had in all these years of making music.”

Noise Addict – “16” [Video Classic]

Ben Lee recently released a new album of covers called Quarter Century Classix via New West Records. The 13-song set was produced by Lee and features his interpretations of early ‘90s indie rock favorites by Sonic Youth, Fugazi, Pavement, The Breeders, Superchunk, Built To Spill, Archers of Loaf, Daniel Johnston, Dinosaur Jr., Guided By Voices, Sebadoh, Smudge, and Beat Happening. Lee’s main collaborator on Quarter Century Classix was the innovative electronic artist Julianna Barwick and the album also features appearances by the punk rock icon Mike Watt of the Minutemen & Firehose, William Tyler, Petra Haden of that dog. & The Haden Triplets, Maria Taylor of Azure Ray, the harpist Mary Lattimore, and drummer Joey Waronker.

With this release you clearly can hear Lee’s indie influences and if you are not aware of his first band, Noise Addict, you should check out their 1995 record Meet The Real You. “16” is a single from that record and worth a revisit!

Catholic Action – “One Of Us” [Video]

“One Of Us” packs a fuzzed-out stomp alongside masterfully giddy melodies that sees lead singer and guitarist Chris McCrory recount “the welfare son of a welfare son”, taking aim at the billionaire-owned media and their Bullingdon Club ilk who shirk responsibility for sowing the division we see in the UK.

McCrory comments on the video; “Our good friend, musician, filmmaker and comedian Romeo Taylor came over to our rehearsal room with some lights, a camera, beer and a tarpaulin. We then proceeded to drink (some of) the beer and mime for the camera. An hour or so later, we had something for people to look at while they listen to the song. So, we took a walk down by the river before having a nice dinner together, as friends often do. Thanks Taylor.”

Catholic Action’s new album, Celebrated By Strangers, is set to release March 27th via Modern Sky Records. You can pre-order a copy HERE.

Kevin Krauter – “Surprise” [Video]

Indiana-based songwriter Kevin Krauter has announced his sophomore album, Full Hand, which is out February 28th on Bayonet Records, and has shareed the single/video, “Surprise.” Following his 2018 debut Toss Up, a quiet album that was built on intricate guitar riffs that looped back on themselves to create a feeling of sunlit calm, Full Hand dives further into the world he’s created. The songs are evocative of late afternoon light, or dust settling on a creaky floorboard, but with lyrics that probe Krauter’s personal life, grappling with sexuality and religion, while exploring what it means to grow up, grow more critical, and, in turn, more self-confident.

Across 12 tracks, Krauter tackles these emotional states and ideas through elliptical songwriting that is at once poetic and truthful. “A lot of the lyrics touch on how I was raised religiously, touch on me understanding my sexuality more and more in recent years,” Krauter says, “just growing up and becoming more confident in myself…that process of looking inward and taking stock of myself.” It’s not especially uncommon for artists to probe deep into their own psyche to uncover what makes them tic, but Krauter’s light touch feels like something all his own. There’s a palpable sense of joy in Krauter’s acceptance of dire, stressful moments, and a liberation that comes from hearing him realize that the present will eventually be the past, and he’ll be able to look back and find peace.

You can pre-order the new album HERE.

Squirrel Flower – “Headlights” [Video]

Squirrel Flower – the moniker of Ella O’Connor Williams – recently announced I Was Born Swimming, her debut album, out January 31st on Polyvinyl. Following its lead single/video, “Red Shoulder,” she now releases its follow-up single/video, “Headlights.”

Speaking of the track Squirrel Flower says: “’Headlights’ takes place in a moment of solitary reflection; a glance back and a glance forward. I wrote it on tour driving through the pioneer valley in Massachusetts in some heavy fog. Suddenly I was aware of the space the car was plummeting through, both physical and temporal.”

Director Bao Ngo explains the inspiration behind the video: “The video for ‘Headlights’ was inspired by cheesy, classic imagery of actors riding in cars through LA— evoking glamour and sunshine. Here, we ran with the concept and placed it in a Massachusetts suburb on a cold winter day, driving around in circles in a convertible, shooting from morning til night, playing with a slightly warped sense of time so that the video would feel a little cold and a little lonely, and perhaps at times a little jarring, while still aiming to subtly reference the beauty of older Hollywood films.”

You can pre-order I Was Born Swimming HERE. You can check out Squirrel Flower’s 2020 tour dates below.

The Jay Vons – “Keep on Moving” [Video]

The Jay Vons have a new video for “Keep On Moving” off their debut album, The Word, which is out now via La Castanya. Discussing the video, director Artur Tort (Escafior Films) stated, We wanted to create a very rhythmic piece, mixing apparently random images collected during a short stay in New York with images of the Jay Vons performing at a small studio. It is a kind of back and forth movement between the almost infinite space of the city and the very condensed, narrow location where the band rehearses. Frantic movement of buildings, trains, and urban shapes penetrate inside the studio, and at the same time music and lyrics escape into the constantly evolving landscape.

The Word, recorded at Daptone Studios, Dunham Sounds and Diamond Mine Studios with engineers/producers Wayne Gordon (Sharon Jones/Charles Bradley/King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard/Bad Bad Not Good) and Tommy Brenneck (Mark Ronson/Lee Fields/Bebel Gilberto), showcases how this rhythmic tour-de-force blends their love for ‘60s rock and soul with a deftness born from decades of obsessive record collecting and delivered by countless hours of writing and performing. You can order a copy of the album HERE.

The Murder Capital – “More Is Less” [Video]

Dublin’s The Murder Capital have shared a new video for ‘More Is Less’ – the live version of which went viral and forged the band’s breakthrough last year. The new album is available on gatefold colour LP, black LP, as part of a limited bundle (gatefold colour LP, t-shirt, pin & journal), CD and as a digital download. You can order the album HERE.

Produced by Flood (PJ Harvey, New Order, Foals) the album features all four singles from the band so far, ‘Feeling Fades’, ‘Green & Blue’ & ‘Don’t Cling To Life’ and ‘More Is Less.’ Alongside the new video the band have a huge string of live dates for 2020 which are listed below, including their biggest London headline show to-date at Electric Ballroom. Psychedelic Porn Crumpets – “Mundungus” [Video]

Following a huge tour across America, Canada, Europe and the UK, Perth’s Psychedelic Porn Crumpets share their new video for “Mundungus”, shot by the band on super 8 and taking us along for the ride of their whirlwind past few months. A new favourite addition to the live set, “Mundungus” premiered on Annie Mac’s BBC Radio 1 show, and is the band’s first release since they shared their new album And Now For The Whatchamacallit earlier this year. “Mundungus is the rare post tour recovery period where all our surrounding friends and family assume we’re crippled with alcoholism, burdened with lives of social estrangement and are far too disillusioned to foresee our self destructive tendencies”. – Jack McEwan Psychedelic Porn Crumpets

Nolan Potter’s Nightmare Band – “Caberfae Peaks” [Video]

Here is a new track from Texas group led by songwriter, shredder, and flautist Nolan Potter. Potter is well known on the Austin scene and has played with Holy Wave. His new ablum is just out on Castle Face Records, which you can find HERE, and this video is a good shot of what to expect – dreamy and lucid keys, strings, drum corps, slippery guitar and buff bass, ripe flutes and breezy vocals. For fans of Embryo, the Mothers, Pink Floyd, Mahavishnu Orchestra, Moody Blues, the Stark Reality, and Placebo.

Nada Surf – “Something I Should Do” [Video]

Nada Surf has announced the release of their long-awaited new LP, Never Not Together, arriving via Barsuk on February 7, 2020. It’s the band’s ninth studio recording — their first in almost four years. Today’s video is for the new single, “Something I Should Do.”

Never Not Together sees Nada Surf – Matthew Caws, Daniel Lorca, Ira Elliot, and their longtime friend and collaborator, Louie Lino – continuing their music vision with catchy indie rock songs. Recorded earlier this year at the legendary Rockfield Studios in Monmouthshire, Wales, the wide-ranging collection revels in the group’s ability to evoke and reflect grand and intricately wrought emotions, whether through sweeping guitar solos or hushed-whisper vocals.

Nada Surf will celebrate the release with a major world tour. The band has also added a run of May and June dates to their existing tour slate — see below for the full list of currently-announced dates.

Pet Crow – “What We Doin’?” [Video]

Hailing from Derby, UK, garage/surf rock band, Pet Crow, will release their 2nd full-length album, Take The Edge Off, on February 7th with No Sleep Records. …And You Will Know Us By The Trail Of Dead – “Don’t Look Down” [Video]

Austin’s …And You Will Know Us by the Trail of Dead are returning after six years with their 10th full-length studio album X: The Godless Void and Other Stories – due out on January 17th, 2020 on Dine Alone Records in North America. The new LP comes as the band enters their 25th year together and …Trail of Dead will kick off the album release with a show at LA’s Masonic Lounge in the Hollywood Forever Cemetery followed by a couple of weeks of West Coast dates. Along with the news today the band is revealing the first single via the official video for “Don’t Look Down” directed, edited and produced by Conrad Keely. The single will be available via all DSPs tomorrow, November 15th, along with an album pre-order.

X: The Godless Void and Other Stories was produced by …Trail’s own Conrad Keely alongside engineer Charles Godfrey (Sinkane, of Montreal, Yeah Yeah Yeahs). Work on the new album began in earnest in 2018 after Keely returned home to Austin following five years in Cambodia, rejoining fellow founding member Jason Reece. As a result, the album sees Keely detailing “the sadness of moving away from a place that I loved,” while also taking inspiration from Steven Pressfield’s book The War Of Art to face his own demons regarding the creative process. “I feel like I’m writing pop music,” he says, “it’s just not Top 20 pop. It’s the pop music I wish was on the radio, the pop music I would’ve grown up with.”

Ratboys – “Alien With A Sleep Mask On” [Video]

“I’m lost, but I’m not afraid.” As Ratboys’ Julia Steiner began to write the skeletons of the songs that would make up their new album Printer’s Devil, those six words, originally sung by David Byrne, meant everything. They became a mantra for the transformative nature of Printer’s Devil, an album that finds the Chicago band achieving entirely new heights as a four-piece and peaks of vulnerability in what is undoubtedly their strongest and most cohesive endeavor yet.

You can check out the lead track in the video and Printer’s Devil will be out everywhere on February 28, 2020 and pre-orders are available now from Topshelf Records HERE.

“Walking In Latonia” was filmed on location in the band’s hometown with guitarist Travis Talbert’s three you old daughter, Ellison roaming wild and free in the place the band grew up. The song’s driving guitar keeps this mid-tempo burner going and when the chorus comes up, “I’m walking in Latonia – got boots on my feet,” you can connect the feeling with your own home town roots.

Frontier Folk Nebraska wear all their emotion on their sleeve here and that’s exactly what you will get with their new album Freaks. Their hard working sound is meant to be turned up! Make sure you watch the video then pick up a copy of the new album. Their current tour dates are listed below along with links to their album order and band info.

Grace Cummings – “There Flies A Seagull” [Video]

Powerfully voiced Australian folk artist, Grace Cummings, made a quick rise within Melbourne’s indie music scene which landed her a contract with Flightless Records. They just issued her debut album, Refuge Cove, last week and “There Flies A Seagull” is the second single.

The debut was recorded in one afternoon by Jesse Williams (Traffik Island, Girlatones) in his Melbourne home. Her voice is unique and powerful – an artist to watch for sure.
