Future Islands’ Best Songs Aren’t the Ones You Know

The rarities collection From a Hole in the Floor to a Fountain of Youth arrives May 22 — and it’s anything but a victory lap

Future Islands

Most bands at the twenty-year mark put out a greatest hits record and call it a celebration. Future Islands aren’t most bands. Their anniversary collection, From a Hole in the Floor to a Fountain of Youth, skips the obvious moves entirely — no era-defining singles, no chart peaks. Instead it digs into the catalog’s quieter corners: alternate cuts, 7” rarities, fan favorites, and a good chunk of material that has never touched a streaming service.

“Find Love,” one of two singles out now alongside “Sail,” is a perfect example of why that approach works. Originally from the 2011 Before the Bridge 7”, it carries the emotional directness that has always set Future Islands apart — Samuel T. Herring’s voice doing what it does, the synths swelling just enough, the whole thing landing somewhere between yearning and resolve.

“The hole in the floor is the everyday, but the fountain is the magic that happens when the life you dreamed about actually becomes the one you’re living. It’s the dream and the reality existing in the same room.” — William Cashion

The album was assembled by bassist William Cashion, who also named it after a lyric he’d long admired. Twenty songs for twenty years, four members, four sides of vinyl. It’s a portrait of a band that has always had more going on beneath the surface than any single viral moment could capture — and proof that the deeper you dig, the better it gets.

From a Hole in the Floor to a Fountain of Youth drops May 22 on 4AD digitally, on CD, and on Blue & Apricot double LP. Pre-order it below.
