“A Pep Talk Wrapped in Fuzzy Guitars” — Weird Nightmare Returns With “Forever Elsewhere”
Alex Edkins of METZ is back in his power-pop alter ego mode with Weird Nightmare’s latest single, “Forever Elsewhere.” Out now via Dine Alone (Canada) and Sub Pop (ROW), the track trades the lo-fi grit of his debut for something brighter and more widescreen—still loud, still raw, but now bursting with life.
Co-produced with Spoon’s Jim Eno and recorded alongside Seth Manchester, the song hits with a rush of jangling guitars and pure melodic adrenaline. Drummer Loel Campbell (Wintersleep) and Roddy Kuester (Julianna Riolino/The Sadies) lock in tight and loose all at once, creating that thrilling “might fall apart any second” energy that makes this tune so addictive.
“Forever Elsewhere” is Edkins at his most hopeful, channeling chaos into optimism with the refrain “Love, it will come.” It’s a scrappy, heart-on-sleeve anthem that feels like a pep talk delivered through a wall of distortion—an exhilarating mix of charm and grit that lands somewhere between Big Star, Guided by Voices, and Copper Blue-era Sugar.
The video—shot on Super 8 by long-time collaborator Colin Medley—captures that same spirit: fuzzy, fun, and full of motion. You can watch it now on YouTube or stream the track everywhere.
(Out now on all DSPs from Dine Alone Records and Sub Pop.)
