The Fire Note Interview

The Olivia Tremor Control

John Kiran Fernandes on The Same Place, the band’s final album

The Same Place | The Elephant 6 Recording Co. | Out October 23, 2026

The Same Place was never supposed to exist, and then it did. The third and final album from Athens psych-pop institution The Olivia Tremor Control arrives October 23 on The Elephant 6 Recording Co., the band’s first new full-length in 27 years. Its 27 tracks were pieced together over two decades and finished by the surviving members after the deaths of both founders, Bill Doss in 2012 and Will Cullen Hart in 2024.

Fire Note contributor Simon Workman spoke with multi-instrumentalist John Kiran Fernandes, who runs the Cloud Recordings label and threads so much of the OTC sound through violin, clarinet, bass clarinet, bass, and voice, about how the record came together across all those years, what changed in the making, and where it sits in the band’s story. Pick up The Same Place HERE.

Can you tell us a little bit about when you all first started recording The Same Place, and how much progress you made in those early sessions?

John Kiran Fernandes

Bill passed in 2012, but we had been getting together regularly (usually on Sunday afternoons) since around 2009 to do focused sessions. Although some of the music on The Same Place comes from much earlier, even going back to around 2002 or 2003. I feel good that 90% of my overdubs were done before Bill passed, and he had created rough mixes for Robert Schneider and other members of the band right before he unfortunately passed. He had my overdubs mixed prominently in the mixes, so I don’t have to guess whether or not he would have wanted something there, I know they had his seal of approval.

The Fire Note

How much work was done on the album between Bill’s passing in 2012 and Will’s passing in 2024? Does most of it date to those earlier recordings, or were there a lot of additions in the intervening years?

John Kiran Fernandes

After Bill passed, grief led to us not working on the album, until Robert Schneider suggested we all meet at Jason NeSmith’s studio to work on some material while the cameras were rolling for the Elephant 6 documentary, The Elephant 6 Recording Co. I don’t know what date that was, but the documentary came out in 2022, so it was before then. Then Will and Jason NeSmith started regularly getting together from 2022 to 2024 before Will also unfortunately passed on. I did a few little overdubs after Will passed: some clarinet overdubs on “Timewaster” through a horn arrangement arranged by Jason NeSmith, and some backing vocals. But most of my material had already been recorded before both of them passed.

The Fire Note

The Same Place has a “cleaner” sound compared to earlier OTC releases. How was the recording process different this time around, and in what ways was it the same?

John Kiran Fernandes

Dusk at Cubist Castle and Black Foliage were done on 4-track and 8-track machines, but most of The Same Place was recorded on computer.

The Fire Note

What were some of the biggest challenges you and your bandmates faced when figuring out how to finish the album? How did you overcome those challenges?

John Kiran Fernandes

Those challenges were met by the producers: Jason NeSmith, Derek Almstead, and Ron Kwasman.

The Fire Note

Even though you’re often described as Olivia Tremor Control’s bass player, you add a lot more than that to the band’s music. What are some of your most noteworthy contributions to The Same Place, musically or otherwise?

John Kiran Fernandes

I’m on bass on the first song on the album, “Begin Now,” but for a bunch of the rest of the album, I’m on violin, bass clarinet, clarinet, and backing vocals.

The Fire Note

What are some of your favorite songs or moments on the new album, and why do they stand out for you?

John Kiran Fernandes

I love “The Spinning Continuous,” especially since we played that at our last show at the Georgia Theatre, and you can listen to the live version to hear what we would have sounded like live if we had finished the album in 2012.

The Fire Note

How do you think about this album in relation to Dusk at Cubist Castle and Black Foliage? Is The Same Place a natural development from the first two in your mind, or are they each their own distinct thing?

John Kiran Fernandes

It’s the final chapter in what was The Olivia Tremor Control continuum.

The Fire Note

Are there plans to release any archival material from Olivia Tremor Control? Maybe a collection of live recordings or an updated version of the Singles and Beyond compilation?

John Kiran Fernandes

We’ve been speaking of releasing an expanded version of Singles and Beyond.

The Fire Note

For those who don’t know, you run the Cloud Recordings label, which has released music from Circulatory System, Robert Schneider, your own solo work, and even your son’s band Dhana Jeera, among many others. What are some of your favorite Cloud Recordings releases, or ones you’d recommend to new listeners?

John Kiran Fernandes

I really recommend people check out the debut Organically Programmed album. I have copies of that on high-quality gatefold LP, cassette, and/or digital download on the Cloud Recordings Bandcamp page.

The Fire Note

What’s next for John Kiran Fernandes and Cloud Recordings? Any new projects in the works you’d like to tell us about?

John Kiran Fernandes

I’m performing solo at a visionary art environment near Buena Vista, Georgia, called Pasaquan, on October 24th. Also, the 14th annual Cloud Recordings Festival is happening on my birthday, November 21st, at Flicker Theatre. I’ll be performing with a new group I perform with called Ms. Petalsss, and leading my trio with Arianna Petersen and Franklin Russell. My youngest son will also be featured with his group, Dhana Jeera.

I’ve been working on some new studio solo material with James Huggins III. We’ve been making good progress, and I’m excited to release that stuff.

“Excited to hear it. Thank you again for talking with us, John!”
