Ricked Wicky: “Poor Substitute”

Robert Pollard’s Ricked Wicky project just released Swimmer To A Liquid Armchair, which is their third album this year, and now today we get a great video for “Poor Substitute.”

The video features Rob Corddry (Hot Tub Time Machine, “The Daily Show”, “Ballers”), Nate Cordry (“Mom”, The Invention of Lying), Matt Jones (Badger from “Breaking Bad”), and Seth Morris (“Childrens Hospital”, Step Brothers), all getting their Pollard on!

You can grab a copy of the record over at Rockathon HERE.

Algiers: “And When You Fall”

London and New York-based trio Algiers today released a new video for “And When You Fall,” which features a heady mix of live performance footage and visuals shot on VHS at night in various locations around London. Directed by Lamb & Sea, who Algiers previously worked with on their “Blood,” “Black Eunuch,” and “Irony. Utility. Pretext.” videos, the video is filled with fast cuts that mimic the driving percussion and haunting howls of frontman Franklin James Fisher.

Algiers is currently on a headlining tour of major markets throughout North America, playing Los Angeles tonight and culminating with a show at Rough Trade in Brooklyn on October 11th. The tour continues in Europe throughout October and November, and the full list of tour dates can be found below.

Wet Ashes: “Spot On The Sun”

Wet Ashes is a Chicago rock band with influences ranging from Post Punk to Brit Pop and New Wave to Shoegaze. Their beginning goes back to 2009, when singer/guitarist Angel Soto presented a few of his compositions to Raul “Picho” Torres. Soon, the ideas between the two of them began to flow naturally and it was inevitable that Picho would produce and create the musical arrangements for Angel’s songs.

They have just released their new video for “Spot On The Sun” in support of their self-released effort, Acoustronic Tales, that came out this week.

Melvins & Teri Gender Bender: “Rebel Girl”

Joyful Noise recently announced its new “Almost Live from Joyful Noise” series, which features limited edition singles from some of their favorite artists, recorded at the label’s Indianapolis-based performance space. Tracked live in the empty space (hence almost live), each release in the series is cut on the spot using a 1940s record lathe and is limited to just 100 copies on hand-made 7″ records with screen-printed jackets.

The semi-regular series kicked off with a special performance by the Melvins. With the help of Teri from Le Butcherettes, the band recorded a cover the the Bikini Kill classic “Rebel Girl,” which you can watch right now. Simply put – it rocks!

Video Premiere: Company Of Selves – “Presidential Model”

After just featuring Fleeting Youth Records last week in our Indie Does It Best: Five Labels You Should Be Supporting and talking about their focus on indie, punk and garage genres, the label throws us a new one – escape rock from New York’s Company Of Selves.

The band’s debut record, Butterfly Handlers & Memory Travelers, is out this Friday and today TFN is premiering the video for “Presidential Model.” You only need to watch the video once to get a good feel of Company Of Selves – Their music (and video) is a mind bend! If you like that edge of rock, Company Of Selves is for you as “Presidential Model” pulses with an intensity that is about a woman beginning to awake from a world of mind-controlled imprisonment that is based on a book written by Brice Taylor. Deep stuff for a Monday I know but think of it as the perfect jolt to shake out the weekend cobwebs.

The band itself is comprised of a crew of friends that have been playing around New York for some time and is led by the multi-talented Christopher Hoffman. He currently plays in several other bands and also is a songwriter, composer, cellist, as well as working with such artists as Marianne Faithfull, Ryan Adams, Iron & Wine, Craig McDean and Michael Pitt.

The music and video today speaks for itself as I think the track is very Eels meets the apocalypse. You really can’t go wrong with that combo – so check it out and then head on over to Fleeting Youth and pre-order your copy today HERE!

Video Premiere: My Dead Air – “Easy To Believe”

My Dead Air is the moniker of musician Dan Ballard which was a member and guitarist of the band Until June. The group had success overseas with a #1 hit in Europe but never strummed the right chord here in the US. Ballard would like to change that with My Dead Air as he now is 100% committed to his once side project.

Today’s video premiere is for the track “Easy To Believe” which is off of his new self-released album The Thief Who Knows My Name. As you will see, the live in the studio video works for My Dead Air’s soft delivery as the laid back track shows his influences that include My Morning Jacket, Harry Nilsson, Glen Campbell and Bon Iver.

“Easy To Believe” really is the perfect beginning of a late night soundtrack that comes complete with low lighting and the occasional out of focus camera shot. Ballard’s effortless playing here is highlighted by his hypnotic vocal and the top end quality of musicians he has surrounded himself with as each individual artist here has a small solo moment within the song.

The Thief Who Knows My Name already hit the streets on August 14th so if you like what you hear (and see) make sure to support My Dead Air with an album purchase!

Car Seat Headrest: “Something Soon”

Matador Records has announced that it has signed Car Seat Headrest and will release Teens of Style on October 30, with Teens of Denial to follow soon after in 2016. This prolific artist (né Will Toledo) comes to Matador having already crafted an 11-album catalog of staggering depth, all self-released on Bandcamp, which has gained him an obsessive following and over 25,000 downloads.

Car Seat Headrest has also dropped its first-ever official video for single “Something Soon,” directed by Jason Reid. The video features Toledo and his bandmates in an abandoned house on Bainbridge Island, WA, acting out variety of skewed domestic scenes: lightbulb microphones, destruction of household appliances, bathtub nudity, and the burning of a cargo box coffin.
