The Whigs
Give ‘Em All A Big Fat Lip
Self-Released [2006]

The Whigs have been picking up steam fast—opening for Franz Ferdinand, Drive-By Truckers, Maroon 5, The Killers, Elf Power, and more. Rolling Stone even named them one of 2006’s “Ten Bands to Watch.” Hailing from Athens, Georgia, this trio took the indie route seriously: they self-produced and self-funded Give ‘Em All a Big Fat Lip, which gives the record an authentic, unpolished charm. You can hear the band’s raw edge, and I’d bet their live set sounds just like this recording—flaws and all, in the best way.
Each track builds with a steady, simmering pace before taking off—no studio tricks, just gritty rock played with confidence. Comparisons to The Strokes are fair, but The Whigs lean more on control and restraint than edge. Vocalist and guitarist Parker Gispert never overreaches, staying firmly in his vocal lane while keeping the energy tight. That self-awareness is part of what makes The Whigs so compelling. They know exactly where they’re headed—and they’re getting there on their own terms.
