Chanel Beads Is Laughing at Himself — and Walking Off the Cliff Anyway
Yes, Chanel Beads’ sophomore album shares its name with the 2024 debut that turned Shane Lavers from a fixture of New York house shows and illegal abandoned train tunnel gigs into the artist who opened for Lorde on her North American arena tour. But Your Day Will Come; out June 26 on Jagjaguwar; is a completely new body of work. Same phrase, deeper meaning. Will your day come? What will it look like? How can you be sure?
“Song for the Messenger” is the first single, built in Lavers’ small Brooklyn studio with the speakers so close to his face he could feel the air from every kick drum thump. He records into whatever microphone is nearby and builds the song from that take — an approach that keeps things unpredictable and alive. Violinist Zachary Paul has a bigger presence this time around, and the gossamer voice of Maya McGrory returns alongside contributions from Tchad Cousins, Mari Maurice, Anastasia Coope, Bella Litsa, and Isaac Eiger.
The album runs on dream logic — fragmented lyrics full of open-ended questions, nihilism and love coexisting without canceling each other out, specific losses haunting the edges. Lavers was consumed by the tension between certainty and doubt while writing, and Your Day Will Come holds that tension without resolving it. Which is exactly what makes it interesting.
