Fire Track: Cusp – “In A Box”

Cusp Crack Open the Box with Their Soaring New Single

Chicago’s Cusp are back with “In A Box,” a cathartic, sky-high closer ahead of their new album What I Want Doesn’t Want Me Back, out this Friday on Exploding in Sound. The track hits like the band’s thesis statement — a tug-of-war between comfort and creative restlessness, where Jen Bender wrestles with what it means to make art when you feel confined by your own expectations.

Recorded live at Electrical Audio, the album captures a band fully locked in — glowing guitars, bold rhythms, and that mix of punch and vulnerability that keeps Cusp firmly on the radar of fans of Built to Spill, Ovlov, and Big Thief. Each song feels alive, stretching between grit and grace as Bender’s voice pushes through waves of fuzz and feeling.

“In A Box” follows previous singles “Oh Man” and “Follow Along,” both of which earned love from other critics. With What I Want Doesn’t Want Me Back, Cusp sound more sure of themselves than ever — still asking questions, but answering with volume and heart. What I Want Doesn’t Want Me Back is now available for pre-order.
