Art Brut: Bang Bang Rock & Roll [Album Review]

Art Brut
Bang Bang Rock & Roll
Downtown Records [2006]

The Fire Note headphone approved

By the time Bang Bang Rock & Roll landed in the U.S., Art Brut had already made waves overseas. The UK version topped plenty of 2005 year-end lists, and now this expanded U.S. release includes several exclusive tracks—most of which previously appeared as B-sides on UK singles. Frontman Eddie Argos wastes no time announcing that this is a sing-speaking record, and yes, that’s his actual singing voice—so get used to it!

Art Brut are brash, sarcastic, and unapologetically self-aware. They poke fun at pop culture while fully participating in it, creating a kind of anti-rock anthem machine. The band’s raw energy and cheeky attitude are what set them apart. If you follow the UK’s garage revival or enjoy the spoken-word bite of The Streets or the bristling confidence of early punk, you’ll find something to love here. Bang Bang Rock & Roll is loud, fast, clever, and undeniably fun.
