Taking Back Sunday: Louder Now [Album Review]

Taking Back Sunday
Louder Now
Warner Bros. Records [2006]

On their third full-length—and first for major label Warner Bros.—Taking Back Sunday aim straight for the big leagues: big hooks, big choruses, and big guitars. Often credited as one of the first “emo” bands to break through, they defined a moment with their 2002 debut, Tell All Your Friends. Thankfully for fans, the core of their sound remains intact.

Lead vocals still shift from steady pacing into soaring, emotional choruses. Most tracks follow this familiar dynamic, though the acoustic “Divine Intervention” provides a gentle break. Louder Now lives up to its name, turning up the volume from previous efforts and pushing the band toward a more punk/alt-rock lane. This shift could broaden their appeal—fitting easily on the Warped Tour or co-headlining with more diverse acts. The only catch? In 2002, this formula felt fresh. Now, it’s a crowded field. Still, Taking Back Sunday delivers a consistent third effort that will please longtime fans and keep their momentum strong.
