Gus Englehorn – “Metal Detector” [Video]

When talking about the process of the making of the video, Preda mentions “I love to work with limitations. It forces you to take a good look at what you have to work with and see the potential in your environment. This video was shot in Gus’ dad’s garage, in Maui. Everything featured in the video just happened to be there. To me that’s what it means to be an artist. Seen the potential in your environment and turning it into art.”

With each release, Gus Englehorn invites us to step into a world where intrigue, emotion, and storytelling collide, offering a thrilling sonic journey unlike any other. The Hornbook, his sophomore release, will be available everywhere January 31st via Secret City Records.

Co-produced by Mark Lawson (Arcade Fire, Timbre Timbre, Colin Stetson) and mixed by Paul Leary from the legendary noise-rock band Butthole Surfers, The Hornbook reimagines the essence of 20th-century rock. From the charm of ’50s oldies and the grit of ’60s garage, to the glam of the ’70s and the experimental edge of ’80s and ’90s indie, this album spins these eras into a futuristic, otherworldly experience.

While his journey on this terrestrial plane has taken him from his native Alaska to Utah to Québec to Portland to Hawaii to his current home (for the next five minutes at least), Gus Englehorn is ultimately a citizen of Planet Gus, an uncanny universe created through a big-bang collision between serene beauty and apocalyptic chaos, populated by folkloric heroes, creepy characters, and oversized insects alike. A critically acclaimed indie-rock singer-songwriter, he spent much of his life as a professional snowboarder, but always dreamed of writing songs. Accompanied by his wife Estée Preda, his key collaborator with whom he produces his albums and creates music videos, his approach is visceral, subconscious and much like his snowboarding career, risk taking and unapologetic.

When he finally emerged — first on 2020’s Death & Transfiguration — he had found a sound that was dark and delightful, fun and demented, packed with dynamics and the chug of a hysterical guitar. Dungeon Master, Gus Englehorn’s Secret City Records debut, is an outsider opus — a playful juxtaposition of isolation, alienation and mildish OCD.
