Fire Drill Album Review: The follow-up to the Israeli-born guitarist’s promising 2014 record Iberian Passage, Yonatan Gat’s Director is largely more of the same—not that that’s a bad thing. Relying heavily on free improvisation and drawing influence from a variety of 60s and 70s acts (think Jimi Hendrix and Os Mutantes with a generous dose of German artists like Can, Ash Ra Tempel, and Amon Düül II), Gat and his band keep things in motion throughout the record, one minute playing a delicate acoustic ballad, the next a thundering acid-soaked cosmic exploration. One can’t help but wonder what might happen if Gat were to refine and develop his freewheeling sound a bit more, but if live energy and no-holds-barred psych-improv is your thing, Director is right up your alley.
