Death Valley Girls Close Out Welcome to Earth With an Anthem Born From Ash
The LA psych-rock outfit share the final single from their most intimate and searching album yet, out this Friday, October 9 via Suicide Squeeze Records.
The title alone tells you where this one came from. “How Losing Everything in the Fire Taught Me to Love Myself” is the closing statement of Welcome to Earth, Death Valley Girls’ most searching album, and it earns every word of that title. A fuzzy, psychedelic instrumental that builds slowly and then completely, it is both a song about devastation and an act of defiance against it. Bonnie Bloomgarden lost her home in the Eaton Fire. She lost her dog Tommy not long after. What came out the other side is this record.
The video, directed by Dylan Mars Greenberg, captures Bloomgarden flying through the sky, shot entirely in-camera using front projection at The Clubhouse studio. The effect is immediately dreamlike: Greenberg wanted the environment to exist in real time rather than be added in post, and you can feel that choice in every frame. Glitter Macabre did Bloomgarden’s makeup, designing a look built around flight, the wings at the corners of her eyes echoing the wings of a bird. The whole thing is gorgeous and slightly unreal, which is exactly right.
“After a lot of therapy, I realized I wasn’t just recovering from trauma—I was becoming comfortable with myself. This song is about losing everything, being terrified, and finally discovering that even when I have nothing, I have all I need.”
— Bonnie Bloomgarden
Welcome to Earth is a record about connection, the invisible threads between people, animals, memories, and landscapes that survive even catastrophe. It features 23 guest singers, a children’s chorus, acclaimed jazz vocalist Gretchen Parlato, and Seth Bogart on the single “Basic Witch.” Tragically, it also stands as the final Death Valley Girls recording to feature keyboardist Gregg Foreman, who passed away during the making of the album. The record is dedicated in part to everything and everyone that carried the band through.
