Speedy Ortiz could easily produce songs that sound rote. But within their 90’s indie trappings a distinct personality develops with the help of angular guitars, barely-disguised pain, and poetically-delivered wit. They’ve delivered before, so it can only be assumed that this personality will transfer over to their new release Foil Deer.
After the exciting release of “The Graduates” and “Raising The Skate,” Speedy Ortiz now presents the grimy “Puffer.” Singer Sadie Dupuis and company adorn a hypnotic gnarl that feels different and familiar at the same time—a bit out of the comfort zone.
With the three tracks released so far, Foil Deer seems to be taking the shape of top-notch record. Each track, especially “Puffer,” has taken a risk in some way that — extended over the course of an album — could net an impressive payoff. It won’t be too long before we find out as Speedy Ortiz’s Foil Deer comes out on the 21st of April via Carpark — I cannot wait!
