30 YEAR ANNIVERSARY
LAUDED INDEPENDENT LABEL TO CELEBRATE 30TH BIRTHDAY BY RE-RELEASING CLASSIC ALBUMS ON VINYL
[PIAS] Recordings, one of the UK & Europe’s most influential and successful independent record labels, is celebrating its 30th birthday. The company will mark this milestone by re-issuing classic albums from its extensive catalogue on vinyl, including records by pioneering artists Young Gods, Front 242, Soulwax, Dinosaur Jr, Crystal Castles, and Mogwai. The albums will also be available from iTunes at www.itunes.com/pias30, where for a limited time they will be available at a special price. [PIAS] Recordings will also be making some rare and exclusive content from the past 30 years available, for more info go to www.piasrecordings.com
The [PIAS] story began in Brussels in 1982, when 19 year-old university student Kenny Gates, a Belgian with a British father, and his friend Michel Lambot, owner of local record store Casablanca Moon and militant fan of independent music, began importing and distributing indie records from the UK to Belgium using the company name Play It Again Sam. Gates quickly expanded the business by forming a label with the same name, it’s first ever release was ‘Faces in the Fire’ by Anglo-Dutch art-rock band the Legendary Pink Dots.
Fast forward 30 years and today the London-based company has over 200 staff, is one of the biggest independent record distributors in Europe, and is home to two labels, Play It Again Sam and Different Recordings. Play It Again Sam’s growing roster includes Seasick Steve, Ghostpoet, Soulwax, and Andy Burrows who had this to say about his label’s birthday: “Play It Again Sam are truly a label to celebrate, anniversary or no anniversary. They’re a record company with a real passion for great music, a rare thing these days. I never thought I could feel so genuinely excited for a record label but I do feel that for them… love ’em.”
“It’s great to be able to celebrate our achievements over the past 30 years,” says [PIAS] Recordings M.D. Pete Thompson, “but we’re also looking forward to 2013. I think [PIAS] Recordings’ 31st year could well be its most important yet, with key releases from Agnes Obel, Ghostpoet, Soulwax and Editors. What a way to start the next 30 years!”
