Sadurn Open The Underworld With the Devastating “the weight”

G DeGroot’s indie folk project shares the opening track from their sophomore album, out tomorrow via Run For Cover Records, and it lands like a gut punch.

Sadurn’s sophomore album The Underworld arrives tomorrow via Run For Cover Records, and “the weight” is how it begins: slowly, quietly, and then all at once. The song arrives as the final preview of a record that has been drawing attention since its first singles landed earlier this year. Stereogum, Paste, and others flagged Sadurn early in the campaign, and now the complete picture is almost here. G DeGroot’s writing is heartrendingly direct, and “the weight” is as good an introduction to what that means as anything they could have chosen to lead with.

The Underworld follows Sadurn’s acclaimed 2022 debut Radiator and expands the band’s graceful blend of alt-country, bedroom pop, and intimate indie rock into something more searching and more hard-won. The album maps DeGroot’s journey through a difficult breakup, the physical fallout of sustained pressure, and the slow process of returning to oneself. “The underworld is the hard times, but it’s also about getting back,” DeGroot says. “You go into the underworld so you can find clarity about your own being and come back changed.” The album was recorded live with the full band, which matters: you can hear the room in the performances, and nowhere more than in “the weight.”

“There’s so much pain in that moment where you are reckoning with the end of a relationship… you oscillate, you can’t comprehend the deterioration of something so beautiful and meaningful, you want to fight for it.”

— G DeGroot

DeGroot is especially proud of the guitar solo at the center of the track, played live by Jon in the original take. They had set up the session so he could overdub it later if he wanted to, just to relieve the pressure. He didn’t need to. What he played in the room that day so fully embodied the emotion of the song that keeping it was never a question. That kind of moment is what live recording is for, and DeGroot knows it. The Underworld is full of them.
