Premiere: Reed Turchi’s “Do For You” Is a Love Song Built Along the River

The Asheville-bred songwriter shares a live-in-studio video for the latest track from his forthcoming album Road Ends in Water, out October 9.

Reed Turchi calls “Do For You” a good old fashioned love song, and that’s exactly what it is, but like the rivers that run through his life and his music, it carries more than it lets on at first glance. Rooted in sneaking out and slipping down to the water, the track traces a through-line from the Swannanoa River of his Western North Carolina childhood to the Mississippi banks where he first felt the pull of sound moving across open water. It’s one of the few songs on Road Ends in Water that steps back from the North Mississippi Blues influence that shapes much of the album, settling instead into a loose variation on a 12-bar pattern with Turchi and Chris Reali trading slide guitar.

The live-in-studio video, filmed and edited by Brad Wagner at Atomic Sound, captures that easy interplay in real time. Turchi and Eric Burns each take a guitar solo, their styles distinct but complementary, the room mic soaking up all of that big-room-wood-walled warmth. It’s the kind of performance that makes the song feel both practiced and alive.

Turchi has lived along the Swannanoa in Asheville, the Mississippi in Memphis, and the Cumberland and Tennessee in Nashville and North Alabama. Now based in Brooklyn, he hasn’t lost the thread. “Do For You” goes over well anywhere it’s played, he says, because the feeling it reaches for is universal: the steam rising from summer green after a thunderstorm, a road built to follow a river’s curves rather than cut straight through. That’s the song, and it just keeps moving!
