Los Straitjackets Unleash “High Wire Act” + Announce New Album Somos Los Straitjackets
After more than a decade without a full batch of new originals, the legendary masked maestros of surf rock are back in action. Los Straitjackets just dropped “High Wire Act,” the first electric glimpse of their upcoming album Somos Los Straitjackets, due September 19 via Yep Roc. Produced by Alex Hall (JD McPherson, The Cactus Blossoms), this LP marks their first full-length of all-original material since Jet Set back in 2012.

“High Wire Act” rips out of the gate with twangy guitar licks, spy movie tension, and that classic Straitjackets bounce—retro but alive, like Dick Dale jamming in a garage full of old monster movie reels. Guitarist Greg Townson originally recorded it on his solo record Beyond The Horizon, but reworked the rhythm for the band—and it shreds.
Somos Los Straitjackets captures the band at full throttle: tighter than ever, loud, wiry, and bursting with off-kilter charm. It’s a fuzz-soaked, hook-heavy reminder of why they’ve been the gold standard in instrumental rock for 30+ years. The band—Eddie Angel, Pete Curry, Chris “Gringo Starr” Sprague, and Townson—have sharpened these tracks through live gigs and soundchecks, bringing a raw, real-time energy into the studio.
Alongside new bangers, the album revisits a few earlier pandemic-era cuts (“Genesee River Rock,” “April Showers”) and features a wild reworking of “Spinout” from Eddie’s side project The Neanderthals, this time with voice legend Tom Kenny on vocals.
Don’t be fooled by the wrestling masks—Los Straitjackets are dead serious about their craft. They’ve backed Nick Lowe, brought vintage surf back to life, and still manage to keep it weird, wild, and wonderfully sharp. Somos Los Straitjackets promises to be another jet-fueled ride through everything that makes rock ‘n’ roll worth cranking.
