Greg Freeman Made All Set the Bone in a House in Vermont With His Friends — and It Shows in the Best Way

Greg Freeman has been a fixture in Burlington, Vermont’s music scene for years, playing drums in Dari Bay and contributing to the broader orbit of Ryan Davis and the Roadhouse Band. All Set the Bone is his third album, and it was made the way the best records in that scene tend to get made: a house in Vermont, a group of close collaborators, and no particular hurry. Ryan Davis produced and played bass. Zack James (Dari Bay) played drums. The whole thing was mixed by Jim Marlowe. It sounds lived-in and warm without being soft.

“Come Around” is the lead single and it sits right at the center of what Freeman does: melodic, direct, rooted in the kind of classic American songwriting that doesn’t chase trends. His voice has an easy authority that makes sense given how long he’s been in rooms with good musicians. The album arrives October 2nd on Transgressive/Canvasback. Freeman heads out on tour this fall with a run of East Coast and Midwest dates.
