Ignite The Rest
SofaBurn Records [2017]
Who: Kelley Deal (Breeders) and Mike Montgomery (Ampline) join forces for their debut LP.
Sound: Ignite the Rest is a stunning full length debut from R. Ring. It is so good that I have quit whining about wanting another Breeders LP…almost.
TFN Final Take: To be truthful, I still want another Breeders record, but Ignite the Rest makes the wait bearable. Kelley Deal and Mike Montgomery delivered 12 tracks that fans of Kelley’s past work will want to hear. I have not dug into Ampline yet, but this album makes hearing them a priority.
If you have been following R. Ring for any amount of time, most of the tracks on Ignite the Rest will be familiar. All but three of the tracks (“Cutter,” “You Will Be Buried Here” and “100 Dollar Heat”) were previously released on various singles, compilations, or EPs. However, do not let that stop you from picking up the LP. The songs come together as a cohesive collection. Moreover, “Cutter” is one of the best songs of 2017. It sputters, jerks and sways like a determined drunk trying to get home.
Along with “Cutter,” other exciting tracks are “Loud Underneath”, “You Will Be Buried Here,” “100 Dollar Heat,” “SEE” and “Salt.” Most of these songs have a bit of a Breeders-esque edge to them. Maybe that is why I love them so much. The more mellow tracks are minimal in delivery, but really highlight Kelley’s vocals.
And Kelley’s voice sounds incredible. She has the unmistakable raspy Deal vocals in full effect and a charm that just exudes cool. Her singing draws you into each song and keeps you hanging on each lyric.
Ignite the Rest is another excellent release for 2017. Do not miss this one!
