Hey Lover
Sinking Ships
Hovercraft Records [2016]
Fire Drill Album Review: I know if you read TFN then you will totally be a sucker for Hey Lover’s style of jangly garage pop. The Portland group will immediately connect as they have the gleaming pop of Imperial Teen with a sweetness like the Vaselines while still having a no care attitude and snarling rock that is reminiscent of Royal Trux. The band leaves it all on the table consistently with Dead Milkmen type foot tappers like the title track and the bouncy opening song “I Wanna Be With You.” The group thinks nothing about throwing in some quality cuss words for good measure along with guy/gal dueling vocals and even includes an excellent cover of “Pacer” from Kim Deal’s Amps. Sinking Ships is a catchy 27 minutes long, so it absolutely takes no commitment but the album is worth every bit of your attention if you are looking for some top quality under the radar indie rock!
