The Friday Fire Track: Monk Parker – “Sadly Yes”

You can try but most likely you won’t be able to pry this funereal Americana from my cold dead hand. Or at least something like that! Just not as dramatic when it comes to the first single and debut solo record from Monk Parker. His new album, How The Spark Loves The Tinder, is due out August 28th via Bronze Rat Records and was written during the breakup of his band The Low Lows & his relocation from New York City back home to Texas. Basically, Parker had tons to write about!

You get the expansive feel of this album on our featured track today, “Sadly Yes,” when Parker sings “Sadly every sweet thing ends / in the end, in the end / Sadly yes, it’s a cold world / & favors cold men,” while the song is quiet for the verses and then sprawls out with all the instruments as they surround his solemn words. The record was recorded with over 30 musicians (including members of Okkervil River and The Polyphonic Spree) and “Sadly Yes” is a great example of some of that talent joining together. Enjoy!
