Datura4 Are Back From the Wilds of Fremantle With a Gospel-Blues Gut-Punch

Four years after Neanderthal Jam, Datura4 are back with their sixth album and they sound like they haven’t lost a step. Dom Mariani and the Fremantle crew return on June 19 with High on the Low Brow via Alive Naturalsound Records — another round of Oz-boogie attitude, heavy psychedelia, and blues-rock held together by sharp hooks and the kind of loose, live energy that makes their records feel like they were captured mid-rampage.

“Dirty Laundry” is the lead single and it’s a bit of a departure — catchy pop sensibilities laid over the electric blues and gospel sounds of the ’50s and ’60s, with keys player Bob Patient doing exactly what you’d want him to do and a full gospel-flavored backing vocal section sealing the deal. The real kicker is local legend Billy Rogers on saxophone at the tail end, turning the whole thing into a Fillmore East freakout that you don’t see coming and can’t quite shake after.
