Jesu
Duchess/Veiled 7″
Matador Records [2012]
This release from Jesu is part of the 2012 Singles Going Home Alone Singles Club that Matador records started this year. Previous entries in the SGHA singles club included a split 7-inch from Stephen Malkmus & the Jicks and L.A. Guns, as well as songs by OBN III’s, the Men and Wounded Lion. Matador only made 750 subscriptions available which sold out quickly making each of these titles collectables for fans.
Jesu was formed by Justin Broadrick following the breakup of the metal band Godflesh so you are never completely sure what style will take place on their records. The A side “Duchess” is a cover of The Stranglers tune and has a heavy shoegaze energy which Jesu has been known for and will please fans out there with its consistency. The B-side is the new Jesu song “Veiled” and is a much more diverse sonic experience as it has a slightly industrial background with the vocals floating just above. Both tracks have more guitar work which Broadrick had promised after saying the band had recently strayed too far into electronica.
The stylish light solid purple wax is housed in a sturdy cardboard stock jacket with tranquil artwork. Matador has quietly done a very nice job with the SGHA club and just announced the 2013 lineup and pre-order. Once again there will be only 750 subscriptions available so hurry over and sign up!
