Cullen Omori – “Happiness Reigns” [Video]
On August 17th Cullen Omori will release his sophomore effort, The Diet via Sub Pop Records. Omori has shared a brand new video for the song, “Happiness Reigns”, which was directed by Sarah Strunin. “Reigns” was not only inspired by Omori’s current girlfriend—she was intricately involved in his vision for bringing this love song a la Beatles or Rolling Stones “into the 21st century.” “Seldom are songs actually about the women in my life, but when I choose to write them I try to act in conspiracy with my ‘muse,’” he says.
“On ‘Happiness Reigns,’ I was consciously trying to prevent the song from lyrically falling into this one-way ode to an idolized muse. Of course some of my favorite artists like T-Rex or John Cale have albums chock full of them but my intention was never to be a rock classicist or to make something that was an extension of my influences. So I had her write it with me. If I was going to write this about someone, even in vague terms, I thought it would be interesting to intertwine their perception of themselves and of our relationship.”
Tomberlin – “Self-Help” [Video]
Tomberlin just recently signed to Saddle Creek and her debut, At Weddings, will be out August 10, 2018. Tomberlin has a new video for “Self-Help,” the lead single from At Weddings. At Weddings is available for pre-order now HERE.
ABOUT TOMBERLIN:
On her debut album At Weddings, Sarah Beth Tomberlin writes with the clarity and wisdom of an artist well beyond her years. Immeasurable space circulates within the album’s ten songs, which set Tomberlin’s searching voice against lush backdrops of piano and guitar. Like Julien Baker and Sufjan Stevens, she has a knack for transforming the personal into parable. Like Grouper, she has a feel for the transcendent within the ordinary.
Born in Jacksonville, Florida, and now based in Louisville, Kentucky, Tomberlin wrote most of At Weddings while living with her family in southern Illinois during her late teens and early twenties. At 16, she finished her homeschooling curriculum and went to college at a private Christian school she describes, only half-jokingly, as a “cult.” By 17, she had dropped out of school, returned home, and begun to face a period of difficult transition in her life. The daughter of a Baptist pastor, Tomberlin found herself questioning not only her faith, but her identity, her purpose, and her place in the world.
Tomberlin cites the hymns she grew up singing in church as her greatest musical influence, and while At Weddings in many ways documents the unlearning of her childhood faith, it’s easy to hear the reverential quality of sacred music in her songs. “A lot of hymns talk about really crazy stuff – being saved from the depths and the mire, judgment. When you actually realize what you’re singing, it becomes really overwhelming,” Tomberlin says. “I grew up singing in church. I was still helping to lead worship when I started coming to terms with the realization that I didn’t know if I believed. I felt nauseous and shaky reading these words I was singing and feeling their intensity. If I did believe this, how could I sing these words without being scared out of my mind? That’s what’s influenced how I write.”
At Weddings is laden with reverence for music itself, for the power it has to heal others and help people navigate their lives. It is a record about learning to love oneself and others without reservation, from a place of deep sincerity – a lifelong challenge whose tribulations Tomberlin articulates beautifully. “My number one goal with my music is for honesty and transparency that helps other people find ways to exist,” she says. With At Weddings, this remarkable young songwriter offers up comfort and wonder in equal measure.
Paul Orwell – “Speak Of The Devil” [Video]
UK’s rock n roll revivalist Paul Orwell has returned and this video is the reason you should be excited. It has attitude, leather and chains. Enough said! “Speak Of The Devil” is the new single off Orwell’s upcoming full length SMUT that is due for release later this year.
Currently you can find the single available on 7″ at the link provided HERE.
The Beths – “Happy Unhappy” [Video]
The Beths have shared a video for their single, “Happy Unhappy,” from Future Me Hates Me, their debut album coming out August 10th on Carpark Records. The video is directed by Callum Devlin.
All four members of The Beths studied jazz at university, resulting in a toolkit of deft instrumental chops and tricked-out arrangements that operate on a level rarely found in guitar-pop. The Beths’ guitarist and studio guru Jonathan Pearce (whose other acts as producer include recent Captured Tracks’ signing Wax Chattels) brings it all home with an approach that’s equal parts seasoned perfectionist and D.I.Y.
The Beths recently toured Europe and will begin a U.S. run next week at Alphaville in Brooklyn, NY. These early shows in support of Future Me Hates Me mark their first time ever playing outside of New Zealand and Australia. A full list of dates is below.

Snail Mail – “Heat Wave” [Video]
Here is the single and accompanying video for “Heat Wave,” from Snail Mail. The track is taken from her debut album Lush, which is out June 8th on Matador Records. Snail Mail is 18-year-old songwriter and guitar virtuoso Lindsey Jordan which you will see and hear on “Heat Wave.”
The video, directed by Brandon Herman, showcases Jordan’s ice hockey skills, a throwback to her days on the high-school team. “I hadn’t actually been on skates since I quit the high school team junior year, so immediately jumping into shooting this was equal parts difficult and super fun,” Jordan says.
Dick Stusso – “In Heaven” [Video]
Dick Stusso, the Bay Area’s own “failure-prone fantasist in a cowboy hat” (East Bay Express), hits the road again next week for a run of dates with Sub Pop’s Jo Passed, preceded by a solo acoustic set opening for Angel Olsen at the Masonic Temple in Asheville, North Carolina. You can see his dates below.
Here is Stusso’s new music video for “In Heaven,” the title track from his recent Hardly Art debut. Filmed on 16mm, the video from director Sarah Strunin takes its inspiration from vintage Leonard Cohen and Nancy Sinatra/Lee Hazelwood clips.

Mitski – “Geyser” [Video]
Mitski returns with Be The Cowboy, out August 17th, and presents the album’s lead single “Geyser,” with an accompanying video directed by Zia Anger.
“For this new record, I experimented in narrative and fiction,” comments Mitski. Though she hesitates to go so far as to say she created full-on characters, she reveals she had in mind “a very controlled icy repressed woman who is starting to unravel. Because women have so little power and showing emotion is seen as weakness, this ‘character’ clings to any amount of control she can get. Still, there is something very primordial in her that is trying to find a way to get out.”
In Be The Cowboy, Mitski delves into the loneliness of being a symbol and the loneliness of being someone, how it can feel so much like being no one. Lead single “Geyser” introduces us to a woman who can’t hold it all in any more. She’s about to burst and unleash a torrent of desire and passion that has been building up inside. While recording the album with her long-time producer Patrick Hyland, the pair kept returning to “the image of someone alone on a stage, singing solo with a single spotlight trained on them in an otherwise dark room. For most of the tracks, we didn’t layer the vocals with doubles or harmonies, to achieve that campy ‘person singing alone on stage’ atmosphere.”
Be the Cowboy Tracklist:
1. Geyser
2. Why Didn’t You Stop Me
3. Old Friend
4. A Pearl
5. Lonesome Love
6. Remember My Name
7. Me And My Husband

Andre Costello And The Cool Minors – “Kinda (Makes You Feel Good)” [Video]
André Costello and the Cool Minors album, Resident Frequencies, is out tomorrow on Misra records. On the border of folk and rock, many of Andre Costello’s songs dance between the upbeat and the melancholy, often landing on both at once.
The Pittsburgh artist isn’t so much a storyteller as picture-painter in his songwriting, calling to mind Wilco and My Morning Jacket in his chords and lyrics, and Leslie Feist and Neil Young in his vocal textures. The “Kinda (Makes You Feel Good)” video was directed by Justin Nixon.
Buffalo Killers – “Need A Changin'” [Video]
Here is a video from the Buffalo Killers for single “Need A Changin” which is by Patrick Bertram Hague. The song is from their 2017 record Alive and Well in Ohio which was released by Alive Naturalsound Records.

Mexican Knives – “Western” [Video]
This new video is on the second full-length album from Detroit’s Mexican Knives. No-Wave Punk done in a way that’s stylistic, subversive, airy, angular, jangly and conceptual. For fans of: The Breeders, Dum Dum Girls, My Bloody Valentine, Mazzy Star, Pretenders & Tsunami.
You can pick up a copy of the album at Jett Plastic Recordings HERE.
Protomartyr – “Wheel Of Fortune (feat. Kelley Deal)” [Video]
Protomartyr have a new release called Consolation E.P., which they recorded in part with friend Kelley Deal (The Breeders, R. Ring) and will be released June 15th via Domino Recording Co. Two of the four songs feature Deal on vocals alongside singer Joe Casey, including “Wheel of Fortune,” which is the video today directed by Yoonha Park (who directed the band’s video for “Don’t Go To Anacita”). The EP was recorded by Deal’s R.Ring bandmate Mike Montgomery. The tracklist is below.
The band has a consistent string of tour dates supporting this ep as well as their excellent release from last year Relatives In Descent. You can find the tour dates listed below. The Consolation E.P. is available to pre-order now on limited pressing yellow/white starburst vinyl via Domino HERE, and limited pressing gold vinyl via your local independent record store when released.
