Krill Are Back and “Dominate” Proves the Ten-Year Wait Was Worth It

The reunited Boston cult favorites return with a dark, serpentine new single from Secret Language, their first album in a decade, out November 13 via Exploding in Sound.

Ten years is a long time. From 2010 to 2015, Krill built a devoted following through three LPs and two EPs, their anxious, mathy, propulsive compositions earning them a cult reputation that only grew in their absence. Now bassist and singer Jonah Furman, drummer Ian Becker, and guitarist Andrew Clinkman (Spirits Having Fun, Moontype) are back as a Chicago band, and “Dominate” makes clear the time away hasn’t softened anything.

The new single arrives dark and coiled, starring the Chicago Bulls and the Iraq War in unlikely tandem. Over serpentine rhythms, Furman turns the concept of domination inside out, asking who exactly benefits from the obsession with winning. A surprise twist lands right at the buzzer. It’s the kind of song that earns its cult status on first listen.

Secret Language was recorded in Humboldt Park with producer and engineer Seth Engel (Patter), marking the first time Krill has brought in outside players. Macie Stewart (Finom, violin), Maria Jacobson (Fran, backing vocals), and Will Greene (Trigger, saxophone) add new textures across nine songs that map what Furman describes as a nostalgic and cerebral exploration of family, fatherhood, and fated love. It’s a Chicago record through and through, the band drawing from the city’s current music community the same way they once drew from Boston contemporaries like Pile and Speedy Ortiz.
