King Gizzard Keep Pulling Tracks From the Void — “Kill for the Steel” Is the Third From Alien Metal

Three singles in from Alien Metal and the picture is sharpening. “Kill for the Steel” follows “Level 5” and the title track, and the modular synth system Nathan is doing most of the heavy lifting again: pulsing rhythms, distorted textures, a seamless journey through techno, hardcore, house, and jungle that sounds like it was excavated from a single late-night improvisation session — because it was. Every track on Alien Metal evolved from the same source performance, a jam that ran over an hour and became the foundation for the entire record.

Stu Mackenzie spent years scrapping entire albums and creative directions before that session unlocked the thing. “It sounds so crunchy, but also beautiful,” he says, which is a good summary of what all three singles have delivered so far. The record is still without a firm release date on p(doom) Records, but the band isn’t waiting around — Field of Vision Festival is this weekend in Colorado, Forest Hills Stadium is next week, and Australian dates including a two-day Croxton Block Party takeover in Melbourne are confirmed for October.
