Mastodon

Five years after Hushed and Grim, Mastodon return with their first album as a band fundamentally changed by loss. Marrow Deep arrives August 28 on Loma Vista Recordings, and it was made in the wake of founding guitarist Brent Hinds’ departure, with Brann Dailor, Troy Sanders, and Bill Kelliher pushing through grief and rebuilding around new guitarist Nick Johnston and keyboardist João Nogueira. Inspired by the Three Fates of Greek mythology, the album channels the weight of the past few years into what the band describes as some of the most expansive, emotionally resonant music of their career.

“Snakes for Dinner” is the latest single and features Josh Homme, his first appearance on a Mastodon recording since “Colony of Birchmen” on 2006’s Blood Mountain. It is emotionally charged and anchored by crushing riffs and soaring melodies, reflecting on absence and the winding path through grief. The album was co-produced by Mastodon at their own West End Sound in Atlanta with Patrik Berger and Kurt Ballou, and mixed by Andrew Scheps.

“All members are hungry, we’re united, and excited to get to work. It’s reminiscent of the very beginning of our band.” — Troy Sanders
