Suneaters Take a Heroic Dose and Sprawl Magnificently Across Four Sides
Even while Suneaters IV: Absinthe Makes The Heart Grow Fingers was landing on best-of lists for 2022, Kansas City’s Suneaters were already working on something bigger. The follow-up, Suneaters V: Heroic Dose, is a double LP with 23 tracks spread across four sides, and it earned that size organically rather than by design. The record sprawls across abstract electronics, straight-ahead guitar, improvisation, punk speak, stoner grooves, and political ferocity without ever losing the thread. It is, as the band puts it, like a four-sided hunting blind: peek through any flap and something different is waiting.
Available today on digital and double LP, Heroic Dose is a record that rewards patience and repeat listens. Its winding path through multiple styles never feels aimless, with the album’s breadth ultimately working in its favor. More than anything, Heroic Dose rises above the weight of broken bands and uncertain times through its unwavering authenticity. Stream the full album below.
In some ways Heroic Dose explains the confusing diversity of Suneaters’ catalog. In others, it opens doors to genres they hadn’t yet attempted. In all cases, it’s a collection of songs that flow together and are fun to consume. A parallelogram with one line pleased as punch and another filled with something approaching sorrow. Somewhere between those poles is where the album finds its balance.
