“Touch Girl Apple Blossom make jangle pop feel urgent, human, and fully in motion.”

Album Review

I really like the simple honesty in Austin band Touch Girl Apple Blossom’s new record, Graceful. What separates the album from the pile of current jangle pop revivalists is urgency. The chiming, interlocking guitar lines of Olivia Garner and John Morales give this album a very carefree vibe with its foot tapping melodies and slightly raw edges. Their alternating lead vocals add another layer of addiction as Garner and Morales sound like they have been singing together for years. Think of bright, crisp guitars that ring out clearly like bells, filling the empty spaces in the song perfectly without ever rushing the music. The band channels the spirit of the classic UK C86 tape scene with its slightly shy vocals, bright jangly guitars and handmade recording quality. It also is perfectly aligned with many new artists that have landed on the K Records roster.

The album never pretends everything is fine which is a little confusing as the overall music is upbeat. As the band rolls through songs about gigs that go poorly, cities that wear you out, and the genuine luck involved in finding the right person, each track takes on a very human quality. Graceful holds all of it without ever flinching its influences and will catch you humming along with some really tight melodies that stick with you. More importantly, Graceful never is stale.

Pivotal Tracks

“Springtime Reminds Me Of…” opens with a guitar lead that feels like someone just flipped the light switch on in a dim room. It sets the tempo for the album and is a track that will hook you on the band especially with its little hint of twang. “Vacation” has an almost conversational feel to it, as each verse feels like it tumbles forward towards you. “Heart-Go” comes alive on its yelped sing along vocals and beginning sharp drum rolls, a song that instantly makes you turn up the volume. I really like the over 5 minute closer, “Big Star Shinin’” as it gives the band a full jam space with Morales leading the vocal charge as the easiest rocked out song on the album. It just highlights that even after hearing the nine songs before it that nothing with this band is ever guaranteed.

Artists with Similar Fire

I think you can hear Heavenly’s sweet indie precision here or Velocity Girl’s ability to make guitar noise feel like pure feeling. Australian band Twerps is a good comparison along with The Vaselines for how TGAB makes urgency, guitar strength and laid back vibes occupy the same two and a half minutes.

Final Groove

Graceful is another great addition to the K Records label and a strong album delivering sharp and infectious jangle pop. Based on the high replay value of this album, Touch Girl Apple Blossom should already be considered one of the best in the genre.
