Dion Lunadon
Systems Edge
In The Red Records [2023]
Systems Edge from Dion Lunadon is a blistering third solo record that catapults listeners into a raucous world of garage rock brilliance. Hailing from New Zealand and now residing in Brooklyn, Lunadon bursts out of this new album with infectious energy and a sound that pays homage to the raw, gritty roots of rock ‘n’ roll.
The album kicks off with the relentless “Secrets,” setting the tone for what’s to come. From the opening riff, it’s clear that Dion is here to deliver a high-octane ride through the garage rock landscape. The production, while not polished, adds to the album’s charm, capturing the essence of a live performance, making you feel as if you are right there in the dark. Tracks like “Diamond Sea” and “Rocks On” showcase his ability to craft catchy, anthemic hooks. The distorted guitars and propulsive rhythms create an irresistible momentum that’s impossible to resist.
Lunadon’s resume, of course, includes The D4, who released two albums on the legendary New Zealand label Flying Nun Records, and he played bass in A Place To Bury Strangers. His sound draws influences from garage rock pioneers like The Stooges and MC5 but injects his own punk-infused attitude and wall of distortion, giving the music on Systems Edge a contemporary vibe. One of the standout tracks is “Shockwave,” a relentless assault of drums, frenetic guitars, and infectious energy, while the smoldering and bluesy closer “Room With No View” comes with grit and leaves you trying to survive in the gutter but wanting more!
The record is full of rebellion, partying, and the unapologetic celebration of rock’s excess, creating a sense of youthful exuberance that permeates the entire album. Systems Edge is a sonic adrenaline rush that will leave a mark on the hearts of those who appreciate the unbridled power of this unpolished and fantastic 35 minute trip!
