Tall Tall Trees
A Wave Of Golden Things
Joyful Noise Recordings [2020]
Mike Savino is Tall Tall Trees and he is probably best known as the highly talented electric banjo player for Kishi Bashi. A Wave Of Golden Things is Savino’s fourth studio album and it will probably be one of the most heartfelt records you will hear this year.
When Tall Tall Trees released the much more layered and psychedelic Freedays (2017), it seemed like the perfect fit from a studio album perspective but I never really felt like it represented all of Savino’s live show sincerity. A Wave Of Golden Things nails it with its more stripped-down approach and warm wrapping song structures.
This approach leaves more memorable tracks like “Happy Birthday In Jail” that has the bounce and rhythm of a song that could be from Paul Simon’s Graceland while “Expectations” may be the catchiest song Tall Tall Trees has produced. When Savino sings “I just wanna wake up in the warmth of the sun and thank the gods for the gift of another one” you can hear his perseverance to move forward no matter what while appreciating what you have right in front of you. It is a simple lesson that we can all be reminded of from time to time.
A Wave Of Golden Things is an enjoyable listen from beginning to end. Tall Tall Trees laid back and carefree delivery is this record’s strength and showcases an instrumentation maturity that makes the album sparkle. The timeless play of these songs is also a big plus as Tall Tall Trees will fit into just about every playlist you can create and has the qaulities to always sound fresh when you hit play!
