Durand Jones & The Indications
American Love Call
Dead Oceans/Colemine Records [2019]

Album Review: Durand Jones & The Indications’ 2016 self-titled debut was a standout release in the retro-soul revival, quickly putting the Indiana band on the map. Their reputation has only grown in the lead-up to their sophomore album, American Love Call. Fortunately, the wait was well worth it.
American Love Call expands the band’s sound on a much larger scale—both musically and lyrically. You can hear that growth right away on the opening track, “Morning in America,” when Jones delivers the powerful line: “It’s morning in America, but I can’t see the dawn.” That message lands hard, all while riding a foot-tapping groove. The smooth soul vibe carries throughout the album, giving it a timeless, lived-in feel.
One of the album’s not-so-hidden strengths is drummer Aaron Frazer’s falsetto. He takes the lead on six tracks, adding variety and a breezy warmth that keeps the record flowing like a summer breeze. American Love Call only gets better with repeated listens, and its classic sound feels built to last well beyond 2019.
