Feel The Clamps

Fire Drill Album Review: Spray Paint‘s newest LP, Feel the Clamps was a really big surprise for this Fire Note writer. I had heard a few tracks over the course of the year, but only one had really caught my ear earlier this summer. The more I listened to the track, the more I liked it and eventually my interest spread to other tracks.
So there I was, liking three tracks for a few months when I finally broke down and bought their Greetings Goddamned cassette off of Bandcamp. I liked those songs, but my interest didn’t kick into overdrive until I finally previewed Feel the Clamps on iTunes. I must have been in the mood for them that day because I was suddenly hooked.
The Austin, Texas natives have a unique sound. It reminds me of a soundtrack to a horror/science fiction movie. Foreboding doom-laden lyrics like “Hear them coming; they’re not human” conjure images of John Carpenter’s The Thing and Invasion of the Body Snatchers. Some of the tracks are slow and ominous and others are peppered with some cool electro punk dance beats which add even more mystery to Feel the Clamps’ apocalyptic, oddball sound.
This is a very unique album, some seriously interesting and morbid punk that doesn’t try to be pretty or listener-friendly. You either dig it or you don’t. I dig it and think a few of you will too.
