Who: DC-based spastic noise rock duo.

Sound: Dove Lady dish out a disarming array of influences and styles on One. ‘Debut of the Year’ honors should be a lock for this fantastic album.

TFN Final Take: Dove Lady’s One is a wildly unpredictable debut album. Over the course of its 9-tracks, the duo of Jeremy Ray (guitar/vocals) and AJ Thawley (drums/vocals) assail your senses with some caustic bursts of noise rock infused with moments of post-hardcore, experimental jazz and even some R&B. They incorporate Pixies and Slint-esque loud-quiet-loud structures like seasoned pros.

While they sound nothing like TV on the Radio, Dove Lady remind me of them in the way that they defy genre-labeling and yet somehow represent so many at the same time. Dove Lady does not hang their hat on one influence too long. The songs are ever shifting and the best moments come in short bursts of sheer joy and exhilaration. There so many great moments on One. It is hard to believe this is a debut LP. Dove Lady’s past EPs were good indicators that the band had a monster of an LP in them, but I would have never guessed it would be this good.
