Guided By Voices have announced their 45th album, Speculation and Gossip, arriving January 22 via GBV Inc Records, and “Designed for Use” is how they are introducing it. Three minutes of buzzing, angular indie rock that opens up into something genuinely euphoric by the time it locks into its chorus. It is the kind of song GBV can make sound effortless precisely because they have been doing this longer than most bands get to exist.
Speculation and Gossip is 16 tracks, which is just another perfect GBV slice. The band is as reliable as anyone in rock, and “Designed for Use” suggests they are arriving at album 45 with something to prove anyway.
