Golden Apples Break Out with “Freeeee”
Philadelphia’s Golden Apples are back with “Freeeee,” a shimmering new single and film-shot video from their upcoming album Shooting Star, out September 19 via Lame-O Records.
The track spirals out with watery guitar lines and a pulse that’s instantly addictive, landing somewhere between Stereolab’s groove and the dreamlike haze of Spirit of the Beehive. Russell Edling admits the song grew out of a moment of frustration and a return listen to Deerhoof’s Milk Man, which reignited his spark for playful, off-kilter production. The result is a song that feels both restless and weightless, like trying to navigate a maze that suddenly turns into open sky.
The video, directed on film by Bob Sweeney, adds even more texture to the track’s sense of floating through space and stumbling into clarity.
Edling describes Shooting Star as a mix of “groovers, rockers, rollers, and bangers,” stitched together with a homemade, unpredictable energy. You’ll hear that spirit in tracks like “Divine Blight,” where the sounds of a friend hammering a shelf sneak into the background, reminding you that imperfection is part of the magic.
Golden Apples’ ear for hooks is undeniable—these songs wander, stumble, and soar, always finding their way back to melodies that stick with you. Shooting Star is less about polish and more about chasing those sparks when they show up, trusting that the path forward is worth following.
