“The cult classic that made shoegaze feel cosmic—and right at home in your headphones.”

When it comes to space rock and shoegaze, LSD and the Search for God have had an outsized impact, especially given the popularity they’ve influenced. Formed in 2005 in San Francisco, California, the band walks softly but carries a big legacy. Originally consisting of Andy Liszt, Chris Fifiled, Sophia Campbell, Caleb Rush, and Scott Eberhardt, the name references William Braden’s book The Private Sea: LSD and the Search for God.

Releasing a dense, whirring, undulating meditative space in 2007 with their self-titled debut LSD and the Search for God, the band has taken on a cult-like status—often described as “your favorite modern-day shoegaze band’s favorite band.” You’ve heard of the wall of sound, but the band uses it more like a blanket—one that carries an emotional warmth that’s hard to replicate.

SINGLES: Though there wasn’t an official single on the original release, Don Giovanni has put specific attention toward “Starting Over,” which now has a new video. The song feels like a breezy, blooming cross between Radiohead’s “Let Down” and Interpol’s “Stella Was a Diver and She Was Always Down”—at least in my brain it does.

DEEP CUTS: “Starshine”’s low-end rumbles and burns like a dying star. The contrast between Sophia Campbell’s angelic vocals and the heavy waver makes this final song a headphone dream. “This Time” starts the record with a rush of exhilaration that makes you feel like you could take flight.

ARTISTS WITH SIMILAR FIRE: The obvious connections run through the greats—My Bloody Valentine, Slowdive, Ride, The Telescopes, and The Jesus and Mary Chain. Modern analogs include feeble little horse, goon, and Ovlov.

INTERESTING FACT: LSD and the Search for God have never released what would be considered a full-length album. Their self-titled release and the 2016 follow-up Heaven Is a Place are both EPs. The band has built a devoted following from just two EPs.

WHERE ARE THEY NOW?: With the exciting vinyl re-release of this album, the band is recording new music. They also continue to tour, with a current US/UK tour run that’s selling out quickly.

From an early age I’ve been in love with music. Whether it was queuing up Sesame Street vinyl on my Fisher Price turntable. Using our family stereo stack to rock out to Billy Idol, R.E.M, Talking Head, Green Day, and John “Cougar” Mellencamp with my dad. Brought up on the classic rock radio station really helped lay the proper foundation for what music was and what it could be. While I do listen to the entire musical spectrum, my favorites are Metal, Soul, Jazz, Shoegaze, and Psychedelic anything. Basically an emphasis on anything rock, I never turn down a good riff.
