Gomez: How We Operate [Album Review]

Gomez
How We Operate
ATO Records [2006]

Back in 1998, Gomez were hailed as the next big thing out of the UK. Their debut album Bring It On won the Mercury Prize and garnered plenty of acclaim—even in the U.S.—but widespread stateside success never followed. Since then, they’ve quietly released several strong albums, and How We Operate, their fifth full-length, is their most straightforward and radio-friendly to date.

While many UK bands lean into Beatles- or Clash-style influences, Gomez sound more like they were raised on American soil with their bluesy, jam-friendly rock. If you’re already a fan, you’ll find How We Operate to be a grower—one that reveals more with each spin. If you’re new to the band, this is a great place to start and discover what the early buzz was all about.
