Yumi Zouma
Truth Or Consequences
Polyvinyl Records [2020]

The third full-length effort from the quartet of New Zealanders who got their start playing shows around Christchurch in 2014, finds the popsters delivering another album of light electronic dance grooves focused on listener friendly melodies. While the four no longer live close together on one continent, they continue to collaborate on dreamy electro-pop with a focus on the female lead vocals of Christie Simpson, which swim in a supportive pool of harmony. Pop singles like “Cool For a Second,” “Southwark,” and “Right Track/Wrong Man” sparkle and shine in the moment, but dissolve and leave your mind as soon as the final synth resolves, no lingering earworms, as little here is all that memorable. The most exotic things about Yumi Zouma are the name they choose, and the part of the world they called home.
Key Tracks: “Right Track/Wrong Man” / “Cool For a Second” / “Southwark”
