Yellow Ostrich, the project led by Minneapolis songwriter/producer Alex Schaaf, has just released the video for their latest single “Julia” and announced their new album Soft, the first Yellow Ostrich in seven years, will be out April 23rd on Barsuk Records.
“Julia” features Schaaf’s crystal-clear vocal melodies as he analyzes the ongoing struggle against an ever-present “separator” antagonist determined to make maintaining human relationships challenging. The song is the first single from Soft, and also appears on the stellar Like a Bird: An Alex Schaaf Anthology (2010-2021) available digitally tomorrow, March 26th. The compilation spans the career (so far) of quietly brilliant songwriter/producer Alex Schaaf, including some of the best material from Yellow Ostrich and from his self-released solo projects under his own name and as Human Heat.
“Julia is about the struggle to maintain relationships,” says Schaaf. “How there’s always something that seems to get in the way (the “separator”), and trying to figure out if this ‘separator’ could be reasoned with, what it would take to make something last.”
