The Takeovers: Turn To Red [Album Review]

The Takeovers
Turn To Red
Fading Captain Series [2006]
3.5 Flame Rating

The Takeovers project sees Robert Pollard collaborating with former GBV bassist Chris Slusarenko, and Turn to Red lands comfortably between the extremes of his other 2006 Fading Captain Series efforts. It’s neither as raw as All That Is Holy nor as polished as Blues and Boogie Shoes, but it holds its own with a shape-shifting energy that draws from both approaches. Slusarenko assembles the instrumental bedrock, and Pollard layers in his vocals, giving the album a collage-like texture with varied fidelity.

What keeps Turn to Red engaging is its unpredictability. It skips from rough-cut rockers like “Insane/Cool It” to atmospheric interludes and experimental flourishes, creating an album that feels spontaneous yet cohesive. While the songs can feel like snippets at times, the overall sequencing and mood transitions are thoughtfully crafted. This isn’t an entry point for newcomers to Pollard’s universe, but for the initiated, it’s another rewarding chapter in his ever-expanding catalog.
