Fire Drill Album Review: Rocky Votolato and Chuck Ragan should be in your collection of singer/songwriters that you always find time for. Both have had previous success fronting bands; Votolato with Waxwing and Ragan with Hot Water Music. Both now have a much more rooted rock vibe going on. Votolata comes into this split collaboration with the first three tracks of his delicate compositions and voice that goes with it. Chuck Ragan then takes over the last half with his much more revved up folk roots rock and weathered voice. He also invites friends Dave Hause (The Loved Ones), Jon Snodgrass & Chad Price (Drag The River) and Ben Nichols (Lucero) to join him, which kicks up his offerings a notch. If you like Ragan’s previous work, these three tracks are right up your alley. Also having Nichols and Price singing with you never hurts either. The last song especially, “Before Dust,” – with Nichols is fantastic and properly closes down the experience. Overall Kindred Spirit is a perfect introduction to both of these artists if you are new to their game while for fans this split should be a no-brainer!
