With Chopper, Canada’s Kiwi Jr. have now released three consistent indie rock albums over the last four years. This record feels bigger compared to previous efforts even though its ten tracks still deliver a similar catchy jangly rock experience but now the band has expanded into adding synths to the instrument mix. Making this addition was not completed without some thought as Chopper was recorded and produced in Toronto by Sub Pop labelmate Dan Boeckner (Wolf Parade, Handsome Furs). Boeckner is a natural fit as his own signature sound and direction are very evident throughout the record.
Right from the opening track, “Unspeakable Things,” you hear Kiwi Jr.’s quick pop smart attack complete with guitars and synths. This indie style is consistent throughout the record but with the keys being more prominent you will hear more Cars and Killers versus Kinks and Pavement. This shift is not that far off from their norm though and it ends up adding more boost and highlights to their songs’ tempo.
If you have been a fan of Kiwi Jr. then Chopper will still be in your wheelhouse. Outside the synths and slightly slicker production, you won’t find many other surprises as every track is solid when it comes to songwriting and likability. Kiwi Jr. is a perfect band to just put on and play. The album does take several spins to sink in, but Chopper’s 37 minutes moves quickly so it’s well worth your time to check out.
